A diverse range of post-graduate research students and academics and others were invited to prepare background papers exploring a number of key sustainability issues as a contribution to the preparation of the draft State Sustainability Strategy. Generally this involved reviewing relevant literature and meeting with local experts. Some new background papers have been completed since the ones prepared for the draft Strategy.

The background papers consider how sustainability is being addressed elsewhere in Australia and overseas and offer a range of ideas and suggestions about progressing sustainability.

Sustainability also has ethical dimensions and a number of community and religious leaders and ethicists were invited to contribute their views on sustainability, ethics and spirituality. Thirteen papers providing multiple viewpoints on the ethics of sustainability were provided.
